E28 525e Automatic · Cirrus Blau METALLIC· 126k
We pulled this low mileage, clean 525e from a driveway in Lincolnshire in 2015 after it had not been used for nearly 10 years. It was, even then, a fantastically clean shell with 99% perfect chrome and rust free panels, not to mention an immaculate blue hounds tooth interior.
The car underwent a pretty thorough recommission which included a huge amount of new parts, fluids and trim as well as wheels and tyres. I drove it personally for a month, covering just over 700 miles before it was snapped up by a fantastic customer who has owned many E28's and is a genuine enthusiast of the E28 shape. The car was pressed into daily service as the owner's sole mode of transport and after hardly moving for 10 years covered 1000!!! miles in its first week with its new owner. It was back for its first service within two and half months and has clocked up 10,000 miles between March 2016 and November 2016 when its owner moved to Yorkshire and decided one of his beloved E28's had to go in order to make room for a 4x4 work horse.
The car has been maintained to the highest level with no expense spared by the current owner. We have carried out all three services and replaced a leaking induction boot and failed temperature sensor as well as setting up the fuel injection system so it is in perfect running order.
Cirrus Blue is my personal favourite colour for an E28 and this particular car is a real head turner. The body work is excellent with all panels including doors, front wings and sunroof panel being completely rust free. The panels are also straight and true with perfect panel caps. When we recommisoned the car in 2015 we replaced the lower front valance and passenger wing. The car has excellent chrome and benefits from having had a new rear bumper fitted. There is non of the usual pitting and specs of rust here. The front bumper is also very good with only a tiny imperfection on the drivers side where it is slightly misshapen. The paint is excellent through out the car with the exception of a small patch on the drivers wing (see photo).
The car is fitted with the blue hounds tooth cloth interior which is in excellent condition. No signs of wear on any of the seats which are comfortable and clean. The dash board does not suffer from cracking as is common on most E28's now. The car has had its heater valve replaced so the heating works on both the hot and cold settings. all the instruments and clock work as they should and the car benefits from having the brown tint glass.
The engine and gearbox are superb, running efficiently and shifting smoothly. We fitted new gearbox cooler pipes in 2015 and the engine has benefited from new spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm as well as various other bits and bobs. The timing belt and water pump have also been renewed. The car has had a new viscous fan coupling, thermostat and a radiator as part of the recommission.
Chassis and suspension, the car has undergone various bits of welding including jacking points, new battery trays, floor and anti roll bar mounting area (All common areas on this model). The welding has been carried out to a high standard and is neat and sympathetic. The car benefits from new rear camber limiters and a new differential mounting. In preparation for its sale this time, we have also fitted a pair of new thrust arms (Upper control arms) to ensure this car drives A1. The car brakes perfectly and has had all its brake callipers overhauled as well as the brake linkage which has been serviced and lubricated and the brake fluid flushed and renewed.
The car is fitted with genuine 15 inch BMW BBS style wheels which have just had two new continental tyres fitted to the front, the rear tyres are also as new. The car is fitted with a stainless steel exhaust which has a life time guarantee. It has a lovely burble accentuating the six cylinder sound and although louder than a standard system it is not intrusive. The car has all its original tools and jack and has a full service history from 1987 through until 2005 when it left the road. There is obviously tons of paperwork and a photographic record of the restoration work that we have carried out on the car.
In conclusion this is a superb example of an E28 with loads of service history, a ton or recent work carried out on the car, an amazing interior and excellent body work. It drives perfectly and being an "e" model it is perfectly suited to the role of a daily driver, easily holding its own with modern traffic and returning reasonable economy (30-34mpg easily). The torquey engine coupled with the automatic gearbox (all UK 525e's where automatics) makes this car an effortless cruiser and a pleasure to drive, a very nice car indeed.
